>> what we're doing is celebrating each other and celebrating this incredible nation that we call home. >> reporter: where he addressed the issue everyone in washington has been discussing. >> i love michelle obama. to address the most significant event of this weekend, i love her bangs. >> reporter: hours earlier, at the white house, his second term officially began, as the president took the oath of office, in a private white house ceremony. >> so, help me, god. >> reporter: as michelle and daughter, malia, beamed, 11-year-old daughter, sasha, encouraged her dad. >> good job, dad. >> reporter: all weekend, workers have been preparing the capitol, the national mall, and the parade routes for the influx of spectators that descended upon washington to watch president obama be sworn in a second time. >> the theme of this year's inauguration is, our people, our

future. >> reporter: while the president plans to look at the future, he'll pay tribute to the past. he'll be sworn in on two bibles. one used by abraham lincoln. and one, fittingly on this day, used by dr. martin luther king jr. the president will celebrate at two inaugural balls, versus the ten held four years ago. even if there's less fanfare, the day will not be without its pomp and circumstance. and star power. katy perry kicked things off at a concert earlier this weekend. ♪ at last >> reporter: and beyonce, whose rendition of edda james' "at last" was a highlight of the 2009 inauguration, will this time perform the national anthem, at the capitol ceremony. who can forget that moment in 2009. again, sasha pointed out, dad did not mess it up. he has one more shot at it. >> that's right, josh. today, a day for poetry.

the prose of governing comes next. and jonathan karl at the capitol for that. as the president prepares to deliver his speech, his team is gearing up for a lot of big debates ahead. >> reporter: you can see the presidential podium, still covered in plastic. it is from there that he will deliver one of the most important speeches of his presidency, hoping to set the tone for a second term that his aides say will be every bit as ambitious as the first. after the ceremonies, all the celebrations and the ball, president obama will take on the tricky task of implementing his second term agenda. >> i plan to carry out the agenda i campaigned on. an agenda for new jobs, new opportunity, and new security for the middle class. >> reporter: on the list, gun control, immigration reform and climbed change. all of which will take support from both parties to implement. the president still faces a slow-growing economy and high unemployment.

but there are signs things are turning around. real estate is starting to rebound. and the dow recently hit a five-year high. >> we are poised for a good year. if we make smart decisions and sound investments. and as long as washington politics don't get in the way of america's progress. >> reporter: and now, the man who ran the president's re-election campaign is hoping to reform it into a grassroots army to support the president's agenda for a second term. >> we have hundreds of thousands of neighborhood team members and leaders in every state of the union. we're going to work across party lines to get some things done. >> reporter: four years ago, the president promised to rise above partisan politics. >> on this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and wornout dogmas that strangle our policies. >> reporter: it was a promise unfulfilled, as washington became more divided.

this time around, he's going to try to directly appeal to some of those who voted against him. and, george, the white house plans a quick start. the president's team has been studying the experiences of other second-term presidents. and they have seen that you really only have about 18 months before a second-term president starts to look like a lame duck. they plan to hit the ground running. look for him to be traveling the country, not long from today, push ing that second term agend. and beginning with guns in schools and gun violence. let's get more from our political contributors. years of experience on the top levels of democratic and republican campaigns. donna brazile and matthew dowd. matthew, the unfulfilled promise of president obama bridging our national divisions and divisions here in the capital? >> these speeches, the inaugural speeches are different than the state of the union speeches. where do you define yourself in

the country in the arc of history? he has to lay out a broad vision of that. it doesn't need to be long. but it needs to give people a sense of where the country is and where he broadly wants to go. >> and he'll try to keep it short. donna, special resonance, that this is martin luther king day. one of the bibles he'll use is martin luther king's bible. >> it's his dream, the vision he had for this country, of bringing people together, and sharing that brotherhood and sisterhood of love. this is going to be a very special day for those who will return to washington and those who are coming to washington for the first time to see our first biracial, african-american president. i think it's going to be a wonderful day of celebration. if dr. king were alive, he would encourage president obama to continue to pursue the programs he has over the last four years, to get people back to work. >> and of course, the fact that he is president, president obama's president, fulfilling part of martin luther king's

dream. jon karl also mentioned, recent history, second terms run out of steam pretty quickly. often slip into scandal. how does the president avoid that? >> really, every day moving forward from today, is a loss of political power for an incumbent president that knows he's not going to serve. you take that back to lbj and vietnam. a second scandal is often plagued by a scandal. president bush and katrina. and that was the end of his presidency. you bring in new people and basically set a pattern and a tone of here's what i want to do. bringing in new people is a big point in how to fix that. >> donna, the president's aides describe him right now as battle-scarred by buoyant. >> he is using dr. martin luther king's bible and abraham lincoln, to move forward to stand for the principles that got him re-elected. and not forget that there's people back at home who want the president to work with the republicans but also want the

president to do what he said he would do, to get this country moving again. >> donna and matt, you'll be with us all day long. let's go up to new york and amy. >> okay, george. not a bad day in d.c. for the inauguration. but bitter cold freezing much of the country. a windily blast targeting the northeast. sam has been tracking the very latest. sam, a big change for a lot of us. >> big change for d.c., as well, by tonight. for today, it's a big shot of arctic air that dropped in over the weekend. if you look at it, no matter where the air hits, it's going to be the coldest it's been in years. chicago has not been below the zero mark in 700 days. but they will get below it tonight. this air doesn't go deep in the south. but everywhere it hits, it reminds you of what winter's like. this morning, a brutal reminder of what winter can really feel like. sub zero temperatures and powerful wins, punishing the midwest. the coldest it's been in minneapolis in four years. in north dakota this morning, temperatures are 20 below zero.

but in some areas of minnesota, with the windchill, it feels like almost 50 below. >> if you don't have to travel, don't. >> reporter: saturday, in michigan, as the arctic front blew through, gusts as high as 60 miles per hour, ripped frees from their roots, tossing them on houses and power lines. this morning, hundreds of thousands still lack power. families now living without heat in the middle cold. in north dakota saturday, driving snow driven by winds of near 60 miles per hour, a ground blizzard. along with frozen roads, slowed highways to a crawl. as these temperatures start to dip, withe got the possibility picking up snow. it's 20 inches of snow. but in many locations, three to six inches of snow. by the time you get to boston, some places in that area will have eight inches of snow. we'll tell the nation what to expect when we come back. now, to the hostage crisis in north africa. new and chilling details

emerging about that raid and standoff at a natural gas complex in algeria. several americans did manage to escape. abc's brian ross has the story of their terrifying ordeal. >> reporter: during the four-day siege, authorities say some hostages were executed. others made to wear explosives around their necks. a phone call from inside, made to authorities outside, about what algerian tv said was one of the hostages in broken english. >> we have prisoners. we have hostages with bombs planted on the body. please, call back. please, call back. >> reporter: an al qaeda commander followed back with this ominous message in arabic. we will kill the american hostages here. we will slaughter them. algerian tv said one of the hostages made this video, as he and others escaped across the desert. survivors said one of the captors spoke excellent english and may have been from canada. and many of the terrorists were

dressed as security guards, making the decision to run for it very difficult. >> you don't know who they are. and we know the terrorists are dressed the same as the security forces. and it was a huge decision. do you stay? or do you go? >> reporter: the rogue, one-eyed al qaeda leader, mokhtar belmokhtar, has taken credit for the attack. we and al qaeda announce this blessed operation, he was reported to have said. the chairman of the house intelligence committee told abc news, the u.s. knew that some kind of an attack was coming from his group. >> we didn't know for sure if they would be this particular place under those circumstances. but we knew that they were trying to find and complete a target against a western target, which this clearly was. >> reporter: algerian officials say they have discovered a number of bodies that were so badly burned or disfigured they cannot be immediately identified. as of this morning, of the ten americans known to be at the plant, seven escaped. one from texas has been

confirmed as killed. and the fate of two others is still not officially known, although there is a growing concern about what happened to them. they were inside the plant when the army launched its bloody rescue attempt, amy. >> we are certainly thinking of their families this morning. brian ross, thank you so much. let's go back to josh in washington for the other top stories developing at this hour. josh, good morning. >> good morning to you, amy. we're going to begin here with a head-on train collision at the height of the morning rush. five people seriously injured when two commuter trains slammed into each other just outside vienna, austria. crews had to use specially-rigged cranes to pull some of the injured from the wreckage. investigators are looking at why both trains were traveling on the same track at the same time. and a tense landing at newark's liberty airport last night, as the united express flight blew four tires on landing. it nearly struck an faa navigation building before

stopping on a taxiway. the 13 people onboard were shaken up but okay. we're looking forward to a speedy recovery for our dear friend and colleague, barbara walters. as precaution, she was hospitalized after falling and cutting her forehead in washington. barbara, giving orders to everyone. and that, as you might well know, clearly, a good sign. we want to show you this. a terrifying ordeal for two fishermen in tennessee. the pair dangled over the edge of a dam for some three hours. they drifted helplessly towards the falls there after their motor failed. thankful, though, for that lifeline, as are we. and something of a wild night in north miami beach. police got a call that lemurs were on the loose. one even attacked a 2-year-old girl. officers eventually captured the pair of primates and returned them to their owner. he claims someone broke into their cage while trying to steal

images outside the home of ronaiah tuiasosopo, as his family went to church sunday. but the man for years allegedly pretended to be a woman, talking on the phone and online with notre dame star manti te'o, is now avoiding talking at all. overnight, his attorney told abc news, tuiasosopo is not commenting. but this morning, jesse tulletel is. one-his first victims. >> this was elaborated for years. it wasn't just a one-time thing. those are years of creating people. >> reporter: for months, she has online conversations with a woman named lennay kekua. all the while, it was tuiasosopo. >> it's crazy. it's unbelievable this one thing was constructed to make lennay kekua.

>> reporter:he said she reached out on facebook, asking about beauty pageants. >> she played volleyball at stanford. she told me she was a victoria's secret model. >> reporter: even though she had her doubts, she said she agreed to meet lennay in person. instead, a man showed up, ronaiah tuiasosopo. >> he was just a guy that wanted to hang out. >> reporter: perhaps the most shocking, nearly three years ago, she says she got a facebook message from manti te'o, expressing doubt. te'o told espn's jeremy schaap, that doubt lingered. >> i thought it was crazy i was with somebody i didn't meet. >> reporter: tuiasosopo is a christian crooner. but those who fell victim to him, said the 22-year-old had

another hobby. tricking them as far back as 2008. six people believed to have fallen victim to him. to this man's cousin. >> the thing that i pictured. it wasn't different pictures. >> reporter: then, te'o. >> the love of my life. >> reporter: even pro football player reagan 7bq'rqmaui'a, say let lennay in 2007. most bizarrely, te'o kept talking about his fake girlfriend even after he knew she was a fake. he and his parents can explain that when they meet with katie couric on thursday for the on-camera interview. now, espn's jeremy schaap, and "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. jeremy, you spoke with te'o for 2 1/2 hours. you asked him everything. but some fans, some people still aren't satisfied with his answers. we know he will be speaking with katie. and his parents will be on the show, as well.

what do we expect to hear? >> i think it will be important for people to see him answering these questions. i don't know what the format's going to be. i don't know if it's going to be a live audience or taped. i'm not sure if those details are available yet. but having conducted this interview offcamera, we only took still pictures. we recorded the whole thing. we put a transcript on espn.com. people want to know how he responds to these questions in terms of his body language. >> was he emotional with you? >> i wouldn't say emotional. there were moments when he took pregnant pauses. he was certainly aware of how much this has weighed on him. but he gave me a straightforward account. he answered 300 questions. and he never portrayed nervousness. he never backtracked. he was very convincing. >> dan, what about the legal issues here? does the damage for more victims change anything? >> it makes it more likely they'll want to prosecute.

in california, one of the states where impersonating someone online is a crime. in california, it's a misdemeanor. if you can expect they can stack up the victims here, and the intent in doing it was to harm, defraud, threaten, et cetera, then there may be prosecution. but again, we're talking about a very small crime and a misdemeanor. but in a really high-profile case, even a misdemeanor takes on greater meaning than it might in an ordinary case. >> this is such a high-profile case. it's gotten so much coverage. it will continue to do so. what does this mean, jeremy, for te'o's nfl career? >> i think probably very little. if he goes to the nfl draft combine and has a great performance, he's going to get drafted in the first round. he's probably going to get drafted in the first round, even if he doesn't have a great combine. this is about possibly top of the draft position. does he go in the top 5 versus

the top 15. one way or another, he's going to be a millionaire very soon. >> it's about on the field. and what about te'o and notre dame? any legal consequences for them? >> some say notre dame should have disclosed this earlier. my question is, why? why would notre dame come out earlier? they did their own investigation, determined there was no wrongdoing. i don't think there's any -- certainly no legal concern. and i don't think there's a real moral one, with regard to notre dame. the question for notre dame, is possibly ncaa violations, i don't see it. >> dan abrams, jeremy schaap. thank you for being with us. time for the weather and sam champion. >> amy, as we get ready for a big blast of wintry air across the country this week, europe had theirs. a picture from paris. about four inches of snow there. 40% of the flights canceled as that hit of snow came across the area. look at london, as well. heathrow having problems.

over the weekend at a dear price. at least 81 people confirmed killed, as bodies are still being found. so far, one american is confirmed dead. seven escaped. and concern is growing for two others still missing. and an atlanta falcons fan is in a georgia hospital this morning, after a postgame argument turned violent. witnesses say the falcons fan punched a 49ers fan in the face. and the 49ers fan stabbed the falcons fan in the throat. the two teams were playing yesterday. police thus far, not able to make any arrests in the attack. i spoke of that game. and the match-up for super bowl xlvii is set. it will be the brothers harbaugh leading these two teams. 49ers coach, jim harbaugh, older brother, john, leading the baltimore ravens. in the nfc championship game, jim's 49ers, erased a 17-deficit earlier to prevail over atlanta. frank gore getting it done

it's part of the american dream. >> i know the obama girls, sasha and malia, are front and center on the fashion world. j. crew came out last inauguration. what are we expecting from them? >> it seems like they're taking more fashion risks. malia wore h&m to the concert on saturday night. maybe it will be something like forever 21. >> always acceptable, which is great. and michelle obama is a fashion icon for sure, now. how has her style evolved as first lady. >> and what do you think we'll see from her in the next four years? >> her style is becoming more streamline. we're seeing less of the jewelry. a sleek silhouette. and that will go even more in that direction going forward. and more glamour at night. >> and thakoon, do you have mrs. obama in mind when you're coming up with your latest designs? >> absolutely. she's been a great fan. when i'm designing a dress, i'm always thinking of her. but also, the customers that are loyal to me, as well. >> all right. it is certainly going to be

house. president obama and his family, get ready to attend their inaugural service. the president coming right now. he did that four years ago, as well. this is the church of presidents. every president since james madison has attended services there. the president comes there once or twice a year. and they will begin their inaugural morning there. we see the president's car pulling up to st. john's episcopal church. four years ago, the president's family sat in pew 62, right at the front of the church. the traditional president's pew is pew 54. but the president doesn't always sit there. president obama. much grayer than he was four

in the morning. went late to rehearsarehearsal. was rehearsing away. and it was as if i had novocain. i thought, what the heck is happening to me? and my husband, thought -- yes. and went to the hospital. and they couldn't find much of anything. >> that's a good thing. >> it was. definitely not a stroke, as tony had feared. and i'm waiting test results. >> and we are hoping the best for you because you write candidly in the book about your other health scare. you had lung cancer. you made the decision at the time to keep quiet about it. why are you speaking out about it now? >> at that time, i was playing tallulah bankhead, who was a smoker, drinker, cursor, wild woman. for which, i was nominated for a tony. at this age, it was great to do. but i thought, this is not going to be good for comedy. if the audience is out there

worrying about their rhoda. yeah. tony and i decided -- >> you were going to keep it quiet. >> and then, it's great fodder for a memoir. and tell people to get tested. women, women who don't smoke, have got to get tested. i would saved from chemo and radiation. >> you write about so much in the book. a lot of it, of course, about what you're most famous for, your character rhoda, on "the mary tyler moore show." we wanted to do a recreation. we have a surprise caller on the phone for you. surprise caller, would you like to say hello? >> hey, val. how are you, darling? it's me, mary. >> you can say hello back. >> oh, my god. >> speak to me. >> i'm speaking to you. i'm overwhelmed.
